I know I often discuss the effects of different music industry features within the American economy, and even the global economy, but Taylor Swift’s newest tour “The Eras Tour” truly encompasses that. “The Eras Tour” is Taylor Swift’s sixth tour in her career, which started in March of 2023 and will extend till December of 2024. This tour covers all of Taylor Swift’s “Eras” of music. This spans from her debut album “Taylor Swift” all the way to her newest album “The Tortured Poets Department” in her setlist, which includes the songs that she performs acoustic. Taylor Swift has performed in six continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. She has performed 70 shows in North America, 6 in South America, 51 in Europe, 8 in Asia, and 7 shows in Australia. Some of the countries she made stops in are Singapore, Japan, Canada, The United States, Ireland, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and many more. In total, Taylor Swift has performed 146 shows across the almost 2 years she has performed The Eras Tour. It’s safe to say that her tour has reached a global scale since, besides Africa, she has traveled to every continent where humans live. Over the course of her shows, millions of people have shown up to her concerts. According to Time Magazine, it is estimated that Taylor Swift has sold over 4.35 million tickets to The Eras Tour. Additionally, according to Statista, on average 72,000 people attended each night of the Eras Tour in the United States. Also, mentioning attendance, she has broken many records with how many people showed up to her shows. When Taylor Swift performed her first night in Australia, she broke her own record of her biggest concert of her career with 96,000 fans in attendance. She broke the record for concert crowd in Stockholm where the stadium she performed in has a capacity of 60,000 people. Additionally, she has broken the record with how many people are inside and outside of the venues, as many cell phone data records report 57,000 people outside of her concert in Philadelphia (according  to Grammy Awards). Finally, Taylor Swift has made millions in merchandise sales. According to Variety, it’s estimated that she made around 200 million in sales of merchandise she sells. Overall, she has grossed over 1.44 billion in revenue from the start of her tour till now. It’s easy to conclude that Taylor Swift has given reason why she could have possibly boosted the economies of where she has toured.

Yet, has Taylor Swift truly boosted the economies of where her tour has reached, or is that just a story people made up? I believe that she has. When we look at the revenue she has gained as well as the number of people who show up to her shows, we can see the massive amounts of possibilities where people can spend their money and people can gain money. An economy relies on many different factors that the Eras Tour can affect, like social organization and culture/values. Although the Eras Tour may not fit directly into these categories, elements of the tour may. In my earlier blog posts, we have established that genres, concerts and songs can influence the United States economy in a positive way. So, that is why I believe that the Eras Tour has positively impacted the United States’ Economy within its many tour dates, as well as boosted the overall global economy. But, in case you don’t believe me, let’s look at some reasons why I believe it does more closely.

First, The Eras Tour has Boosted local economies. As I stated in previous works, there are many ways a tour can build the economy. When people go to the town the concert is in, they often buy food from local restaurants. They may take public transit to get to the venue location or to get back home. They may also spend money to stay in hotels so they don’t have to travel late at home. According to Bloomberg Economics, The Eras Tour boosted the hospitality industry by millions of dollars in revenue. These are just a few examples of how a consumer can cause affects. Concerts also often come with high demand, especially The Eras Tour. So, cities may build new stadiums or venues, and even upgrade already existing ones which stimulates an increase in economy. These new developments also need people to build and design them, which creates new jobs for people to earn from. New jobs can also be made in retail and transportation to help deal with the influx of people that may come in with concerts coming to town. Additionally, a tour can bring popularity to a town, and cause people to come back.

Second, the music produced with the influence of The Eras Tour has been very popular. As established, songs on streaming and copies of physical albums directly affect the economy. Taylor swift has released CD variants, like Midnights (Til Dawn Edition) and Midnights (The Late Night Edition), and she has released a live version of her song “Cruel Summer” on streaming. These were all released while she was on The Eras Tour, which probably gave them a lot more popularity since she had a space to promote it. Either way, since Taylor Swift has released music during the tour, these albums and singles have directly impacted the economy since there have been thousands of copies sold and millions of streams online.

Additionally, Taylor Swift’s influence is huge when it comes to the economy. For many businesses, most directly clothing businesses, this is great news. For example, when Swift released a video of her wearing a lilac skirt, many of her fans went and bought the skirt because she had it. This is only the beginning of her influence, yet it proves that she has major influence over consumer demand and the economy since fans are willing to buy almost anything she has.

Finally, as I discussed a bit, Taylor swift has huge market power. To define, Market Power is a company’s, or in this case a person’s, ability to influence the price of a product or service by manipulating its supply and demand. One example of this when it comes to The Eras Tour is how many places will up their prices when one of her shows is taking place in a town. The hotels in the area may increase room prices, transportation may increase in demand, and restaurants may have more demand for food than they are used to. This is because many people travel to come and see one of her shows. With the demand from consumers, local businesses are able to increase their revenue and stimulate the economy of that location. This impact has been called “Swiftonomics” by critics. It basically looks at how her concerts in certain places stimulate the local economies of these towns and generates revenue from tourism. Since this term exists, it’s proven that The Eras Tour is able to boost the local economy of the places she goes to because of her increasing influence over market power and increasing tourism revenue.

Overall, we all know that Taylor Swift and her Era’s Tour has major influence over the economy. From the 146 shows she has performed over the last two years and the music she has produced in those years, she has majorly influenced the economy. Fans from all over come and invest their time and money into local establishments where the concerts take place. They stay in hotels and use public transportation which benefits the local economy of these cities. She also directly boosts the U.S. economy by producing music that gets hundreds of millions of online streams and gets thousands of physical copies sold through the different CD and Vinyl variants. Fans will buy almost any piece of clothing, bag, and item she owns if she shows it off online, making these items sell out in minutes. The term “Swiftonomics” being used by many critics supporting the fact that she has influence over the economy just shows her influence. In my opinion, I think it’s wrong to say that Swift hasn't had any influence over the economy. Through these countless examples, and many others I have not mentioned, she has had a major impact on the economy. If you don’t enjoy her music or don’t like her as a person, that’s one thing. Yet, you still can’t deny the major influence she has on supply and demand. Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” has boosted the economy.

On a side note, I do want to apologize for this post being a week late. I was very busy the past two weeks, so posting hasn’t been my first priority. That is also why this post is shorter than normal. Next post will be back to normal. Thank you! :)
